Call of Duty: World at War Review
July 3rd, 2009
The world is at war again in the latest installation in the Call of Duty series by Treyarch. Treyarch decided to change the theme of Modern Warfare back to the theme of World War II, but kept the trusty Call of Duty engine, and while it might seem played out it still provides tons of fun for Call of Duty addicts!
The single player campaign is particularly well done with many graphically brutal and destructive moments. The storyline has a more “documentary” feel to it switching between a United States Marine fighting against Japan in the Pacific theatre and a Russian infantryman pushing towards Berlin. A fantastic addition to this installation is the ability to play the campaign online co-op over Xbox Live or the Playstation Network if you so please. Once you beat the campaign solo you will unlock the Nazi Zombie mode and you will be able to play this mode online as well too.
Nazi Zombie mode is a new addition to World at War as well. Nazi Zombie is a mode similar to Horde in Gears of War 2. For those who still don’t have a clue, there are many CPU controlled AI who will storm your squad and your job will be simply to eliminate them. Watch it! These zombies can fight back! Randomly a weapon chest will give you randomly chosen weapons, anything from fully auto rifles like the STG to a spare Colt 1911 .45 pistol. So you will have to make the best of what the game gives you. This mode is very exciting and if you have the new World at War map pack, you will be able to play Nazi Zombies on a new map as well as a couple new multiplayer maps as well. The best way to play this mode is with a group of friends, so go grab a couple friends and go destroy the Zombie swarm!
The online aspect of World at War is just as fun, if not better than its predecessor in Modern Warfare. There is a wide variety of guns, maps, and a new addition to online play, mini tanks! Woo hoo! While this addition might seem overpowering (and it can be) to the online game play, these tanks can be taken down with a couple of bazookas, satchel charges, or sticky grenades. There are still many challenges to keep us entertained and Prestige mode is back as well, but this time around the level cap is boosted from 55 to 65. There is also a little reward in that every time you choose to go Prestige, another custom weapon slot will be unlocked and available for use. All this mixed with the fantastic game play skeleton provided to us from Modern Warfare should prove for wild fun.
This game is a great addition to any video game library and should give hours and days of fun and entertainment to Call of Duty, First Person Shooter, and World War II junkies alike.
